Welcome to the test Unexpected Situations – 06.
This test contains 3 situations that you can choose from the menu on the left hand side of this page. Always try to answer before reading the expected answer!
PILOT: MIAMI DEPARTURE, AC1015, WE HAD A TCAS RESOLUTION. REQUEST VECTORS TO RETURN TO MIAMI AIRPORT, DUE TO INJURED PASSENGERS.
ATC: AC 1015, ROGER, CLEARED TO RETURN TO MIAMI AIRPORT. YOU WILL BE VECTORED.
EXAMINER: Now tell me in your own words everything the pilot and controller said.
I understood that the pilot of AC 1015 informed Miami departure that they had a tcas resolution and they had injured passengers on board. They requested to return to Miami airport.
The controller cleared AC 1015 to return to Miami airport and informed that they would be vectored.
EXAMINER: What are the procedures for a TCAS resolution? Have you had this situation before?
The procedures are first of alL…. then….. and finally…..
I have never had this situation before.
EXAMINER: Now listen to situation number 2.
PILOT: ORLY TOWER, EASY 49, OUR LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR IS JAMMED. REQUEST PROCEED TO HOLDING AREA IN ORDER TO CARRY OUT COMPLETE CHECK.
ATC: EASY 49, ROGER CLIMB TO 2.000 FT AND TURN LEFT HEADING 350 TO MIKE ECHO LIMA VOR.
EXAMINER: Now tell me in your own words everything the pilot and controller said.
I understood the pilot of EASY 49 contacted orly tower and told them their left main landing gear was jammed. They requested to proceed to a holding area in order to carry out a complete check.
The controller cleared EASY 49 to climb to 2.000 ft and turn left heading 350 to mike echo lima VOR.
EXAMINER: What are the procedures for a jammed landing gear?
First the pilot should try to recycle the landing gear.
Then if that doesn’t work he should inform the ATC and request a low pass.
And finally perform an emergency landing on the longest runway possible.
EXAMINER: Now situation number 3.
PILOT: BRASILIA TOWER, AZUL 1012, WE REJECTED TAKE OFF DUE TO A TIRE BLOW OUT. WE WILL MAINTAIN POSITION TO READ THE CHECK LIST.
ATC: AZUL 1012 , ROGER, I UNDERSTOOD YOU WILL MANTAIN POSITION TO READ THE CHECK LIST. REPORT WHEN READY TO LEAVE THE RUNWAY.
EXAMINER: Now tell me in your own words everything the pilot and controller said.
I understood the pilot of AZUL 1012 informed Brasilia tower that they rejected take off due to a tire blow out. They then informed they would maintain position to read the checklist.
The controller understood they would maintain position to read the checklist, and told AZUL 1012 to inform when they were ready to vacate the runway.
EXAMINER: What are the consequences of a tire blow out?
In my opinion the consequences of a tire blow out can be:
- Aircraft grounded
- Flight cancelations
- And finally the runway might be closed.
EXAMINER: Now, considering the three situations you have heard in part three: How would you compare them? You may want to compare them in terms of severity, possible solutions and ways of prevention. Which one do you think is the most difficult to deal with? Why?
In my opinion the TCAS resolution is not so serious.
The tire blow out is worse than the TCAS resolution as it can cause many flight delays, panic the passengers and the aircraft might be grounded.
But the worst situation to deal with is the jammed landing gear as it’s a hard situation for the pilots to resolve and the pilots have to prepare for an emergency landing.
EXAMINER: Thank you. That is the end of part three.
