Welcome to the test Unexpected Situations – 11.
This test contains 3 situations that you can choose from the menu on the left hand side of this page. Always try to answer before reading the expected answer!
PILOT: MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY, DUBAI TOWER, JET AIRWAYS 942. WE` VE GOT A PROBLEM ON OUR ENGINE NUMBER 2. IT SEEMS TO BE INOPERATIVE. WE ARE UNABLE TO DUMP FUEL. WE REQUEST AN OVERWEIGHT LANDING. WE REQUEST ASSISTANCE.
ATC: JET AIRWAYS 942, ROGER. ASSISTANCE WILL BE PROVIDED AFTER LANDING. REPORT ON THE FINAL APPROACH
EXAMINER: Now tell me in your own words everything the pilot and controller said.
I understood that the pilot of JET AIRWAYS 942 declared an emergency and he reported a problem on engine number 2, it seemed to be inoperative and they were unable to dump fuel. The pilot requested an overweight landing and assistance upon arrival. The controller understood and said that assistance would be provided after landing and asked JET AIRWAYS 942 to report on final approach
EXAMINER: In your opinion what are the outcomes of an overweight landing?
In my opinion an overweight landing can cause structural damage to the aircraft, overrun of the runway and the aircraft would have to go through maintenance.
EXAMINER: Now listen to situation number 2.
PILOT: MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY, FRANKFURT TOWER, RYAN AIR 848 WE’VE SKIDDED OFF THE RUNWAY DUE TO ICE ON THE RUNWAY. WE REQUEST ASSISTANCE.
ATC: RYAN AIR 848, EMERGENCY SERVICES ARE ON THE WAY. CONFIRM YOU HAVE STARTED THE EMERGENCY EVACUATION.
EXAMINER: Now tell me in your own words everything the pilot and controller said.
The pilot declared an emergency due to a runway excursion caused by ice on the runway and requested assistance on the ground. The controller informed that emergency services would be on the way and asked the pilot to confirm if he had started an emergency evacuation.
EXAMINER: What factors can lead an aircraft to suffer a runway excursion?
A runway excursion can be caused by a tire blowout, slippery runway or break failure.
EXAMINER: Now situation number 3.
PILOT: FRANKFURT CONTROL, THOMAS COOK 197. WE HAVE UNRELIABLE INDICATION IN OUR NAVIGATION INSTRUMENT. WE REQUEST VECTORS TO OUR DESTINATION.
ATC: THOMAS COOK 197, KEEP PRESENT HEADING. ARE YOU UNDER VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS?
EXAMINER: Now tell me in your own words everything the pilot and controller said.
I understood that the pilot of THOMAS COOK 197, reported an unreliable indication in their navigation instrument and requested vectors for destination. The controller instructed THOMAS COOK 197 to keep the present heading and asked if they were under visual meteorological conditions.
EXAMINER: Do you think that modern navigation systems can improve the safety of the flight?
I believe that a modern navigation systems can improve the safety of the flight because the navigation would be more precise and therefore, the possibility of error is reduced also a modern navigation system would have a more efficient backup.
EXAMINER: Now, considering the three situations you have heard in part three: How would you compare them? You may want to compare them in terms of severity, possible solutions and ways of prevention. Which one do you think is the most difficult to deal with? Why?
In my opinion the navigation failure is not so serious. because normally the pilot has back up systems in the cockpit an overweight landing is worse than the navigation failure because it can cause structural damage, overrun of the runway and the aircraft would need to go through maintenance.
I think that the runway excursion is the worst situation out of the three because it can cause panic onboard, structural damage to the aircraft and even a disaster.
EXAMINER: Thank you. That is the end of part three.
